Pentagon issues new Guantanamo plans

The United States Department of Defence has released details of its plans for new military review panels to consider the cases of detainees at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The Pentagon has acknowledged that many of those held at the camp could remain there indefinitely without a trial.

Under the plan, panels of three military officers would effectively serve as parole boards for detainees.

While the prisoners would be assisted in making their own case for release, at least once a year, they would have no right to a lawyer.

The Pentagon has asked for comments from the American public on the proposals, which it says, are still at a draft stage.
