Interim Iraqi constitution agreed

Iraq's US-appointed Governing Council has agreed a temporary national constitution, after days of deliberation.

The document will apply only until an elected government is in place.

Compromises were reached on the main issues that had divided delegates, who are expected to sign the document on Wednesday.

The document says Islam is to be a source of legislation, but not the sole source, as conservatives had wanted.

The document sets a target of 25% for representation of women in a forthcoming transitional assembly.
