Guarantees sought on renewable energy

Irish environmentalists have joined campaigners from 21 other European countries in demanding that Environment Ministers push forward with plans to increase the use of renewable energies such as wind and solar.

In a joint letter ahead of an EU meeting in Brussels tomorrow on climate change, the organisations claim the ministers’ leadership on greenhouse gas reductions will evaporate if they support big industry and fossil fuel lobbies.

Greenhouse Ireland Action Network and other lobbyists claim it is feasible for Europe to have one quarter of its energy supply from renewables by 2020 if action is taken now.

The current carbon emission rate for Ireland is 29% above the levels they were in 1990 even though the Government committed itself to keeping the rate at just 13%.
