The Democratic Unionist Party has selected a Belfast-based barrister, Jim Allister, to replace Ian Paisley as its candidate in the forthcoming European elections.
Mr Allister, who is 50, beat party colleagues William McCrea, Maurice Morrow and Paul Berry to secure the nomination.
A former Westminster candidate, Mr Allister left active politics after being refused permission to contest the East Antrim constituency in 1987.
Speaking after his selection last night, he said he was confident he would retain the European seat held by the party leader since 1979.
