UK Police raid addresses in sea deaths probe

British police have raided a number of addresses in Liverpool as part of their investigation of the deaths of 19 people who were drowned off the Lancashire coast on Thursday night.

The victims were all Chinese migrant workers who were trapped by an incoming tide as they picked cockles at Morecambe Bay in Northwest England.

SIxteen others, who were trapped by the tides survived and were later rescued, and are now in the care of UK social services.

Police say the workers were illegally employed on very low wages to collect the shellfish.

The deaths have led to calls in Britain for a legally-binding register of sub-contractors, known as gangmasters, who make use of migrant labour.
