IFA support for renewable energy

The Irish Farmers Association has called on the Government to get off the fence and wholeheartedly support renewable energy production from agriculture as other EU countries are already doing.

The call was made at a conference in Wexford in which the ESB's approach to the wind energy sector was also criticised.

Francis Fanning, IFA spokesperson, said that in Co Wexford alone, €1m worth of energy in the form of electricity is needed every day, and 50% of this could be produced through the renewable energy sector.

He was speaking at the National Renewable Energy Conference, adding that support for renewable energy production would pay multiple dividends to the country in return.

The Conference welcomed the Government's measures to allow for the removal of excise duty on biofuels under certain projects, but speakers urged that further practical policy measures and support be implemented immediately.
