The third increase in the national minimum wage of €7 an hour came into effect this morning.
It is almost €1.50 more than when the National Minimum Wage was first introduced in April 2000.
The last rise, in October 2002, brought the rate to €6.35.
The sub-minimum rate for under 18s, first time job entrants and those engaged in training or study also went up today.
Junior Minister at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment Frank Fahey has said that, so far, inspections have shown a high level of compliance with the minimum wage.
However, he warned employers that Labour Inspectors will be out in force over the coming weeks to make sure workers are paid the increase.
