CIÉ unions meet over Transport Dept proposals

A meeting of SIPTU strike committees at the three CIÉ companies has ended.

The committees were meeting to consider proposals put forward yesterday by the Minister for Transport, Séamus Brennan.

A statement from SIPTU on the minister's proposals for a new talks process on the future of the company is expected this evening.

Yesterday the National Bus and Railworkers' Union, which represents a majority of bus drivers, gave the proposals a cautious welcome.

Unions slammed by CCI

Separately, the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland have accused public transport unions of guerrilla-tactic industrial relations to prevent the introduction of competition in the transport sector.

Speaking ahead of today's plenary meeting of the social partners at Dublin Castle, CCI President Mark Staunton said that ultimately the private sector would be left to pay the price for whatever concessions are forced by what he called the blatant bully tactics of CIÉ and Aer Rianta unions.

Mr Staunton said that vested interests seeking to prevent the introduction of competition in transport services were creating uncertainty and disruption, and stunting the sort of efficiency gains already realised through the private sector.

He said the CCI was also concerned that the partnership process was being by-passed by back-room discussions.
