Bird flu suspect dies of pneumonia

A man in Thailand, who was suspected of having the bird flu virus, has died of pneumonia.

The 56-year-old chicken butcher was one of six people tested for the virus, which can pass from poultry to humans. Two children were confirmed as having the disease.

The European Union has banned the import of poultry products from Thailand following the outbreak.

The move follows overnight talks between the EU Consumer Protection Commissioner, David Byrne, and his Commission colleagues.

Cambodia is the latest country to confirm an outbreak among chickens. The bird flu has already killed five people in Vietnam, where a mass slaughter of chickens is underway.

The World Health Organisation has warned that bird flu could mutate and develop into an epidemic worse than SARS which also crossed from animals to humans.

The EU imported over 130,000 tonnes of poultry products from Thailand last year. No live poultry is imported and the risk from processed chicken is thought to be very low.
