Union pulls out of talks on CIÉ's future

Commuters could be facing travel disruption after the National Bus and Railworkers' Union said it will not continue talks with the Department of Transport about the future of CIÉ.

The national executive of the NBRU met for three hours today to decide the union's stance on the break-up of CIÉ. Its leadership has been mandated to take whatever industrial action is necessary to prevent the company from being broken up.

The union will not outline what form industrial action might take but it may involve a series of one-day work stoppages.

A Department of Transport spokesman said Minister Séamus Brennan had a right to articulate his policy position, and said that did not have to conflict with ongoing negotiations.

The CIÉ group of unions is due to meet on Thursday to decide its next move. The unions are due to meet Department of Transport officials next week but those talks may not now go ahead.
