The Taoiseach has criticised President of the European Commission Romano Prodi for remarks he made last week on European integration.
On RTÉ Radio's This Week programme, Bertie Ahern said that Mr Prodi's suggestion that a two-speed Europe might emerge if member states cannot agree was 'not helpful'.
Commenting on the smoking ban in pubs and restaurants, which comes into effect next month, Mr Ahern appealed to smokers to comply with the measure.
He asked them to understand that the ban was for the greater good of everyone and he did not want to see a nanny state having to enforce the law.
