Another US soldier was killed in Iraq last night in an ambush on a vehicle patrol in the capital's Karkh district, and a second soldier and an Iraqi interpreter were injured.
Today, the US military said yesterday's fuel tanker explosion in Baghdad was caused by an accident, not a bomb.
Iraqi leader urges Iran payments
The head of Iraq's interim governing council has sought compensation for Iran in reparation for Iraq's invasion of its neighbour in the 1980s.
After a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, chairman Abdul Aziz al-Hakim told a press conference that Iran deserved reparations, but said that further discussions would be necessary to determine whether Iraq would pay.
Iran claims it is owed around $100bn in compensation, and has noted that Kuwait was awarded a similar sum for being invaded by Saddam Hussein's troops in 1990.
Mr al-Hakim is the head of the main Shi'ite Muslim party in Iraq, and is believed to have close ties to Iran where his party was based during Saddam Hussein's leadership. He has also said that all countries should be able to participate in Iraq's reconstruction.
Another member of the interim government said he expects Saddam Hussein and 38 other detainees to be returned to the custody of Iraqis in the near future so that they can be tried by an Iraqi tribunal.
Samai Sumadai said Iraqi law would permit a tribunal to impose a death sentence, but this could not be carried out until coalition forces conceded sovereignty to an Iraqi government.
