Polling has begun in Cyprus in an election which may determine whether the Turkish Cypriots enter the European Union next year.
The election in the so-called Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (recognised only by Ankara) is thought to favour opposition parties.
The result may determine whether northern Cypriots become members of the Union in a federation with their Greek compatriots.
The election is also seen as representative of public opinion on the reunification of Cyprus.
The governing National Unity Party has rejected the latest plan by the United Nations to re-unite the island.
