US army officer resigns over charges

An American army officer has resigned after being found guilty of the aggravated assault of an Iraqi policeman.

Lieutenant Colonel Allen West, who led a battalion in northern Iraq, was charged with beating and threatening to kill the man during questioning.

The policeman had been arrested north of Baghdad.

In a closed military hearing, Lieutenant Colonel West admitted breaking army rules and tendered his resignation.

He was fined $5,000 but escaped a full military trial due to mitigating factors.

US soldier killed in Ramadi

Meanwhile, an American soldier has been killed and two have been injured in Iraq.

They were travelling in a convoy near the town of Ramadi, west of Baghdad, when a bomb exploded at the side of the road.

In a separate incident in the northern Iraqi town of Tikrit, American troops have shot dead a man who they claim was shooting at them from a speeding car.

The driver of the car claims the man was not firing at the soldiers but was celebrating a wedding.
