Irish soldier dies in Liberian accident

Tributes have been paid to the 33-year-old army ranger who was killed in a road traffic accident while on patrol during peace enforcement duties in Liberia, West Africa yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, the condition of a second soldier involved in the accident is now described as stable although he sustained serious leg injuries.

The man who died was Sergeant Derek Mooney from Blackrock in Dublin.

President Mary McAleese, the Taoiseach and the Minister for Defence have expressed sympathy to his parents, fianceé and members of his family.

The injured soldier is Sergeant Sean Baldwin (39) from Newbridge, Co Kildare who is also a ranger. He has undergone major surgery on his right leg.

The men were travelling in a jeep as part of a convoy when it left the road about 40 miles south of the capital, Monrovia.

They were part of an advance party sent to Liberia only last week to set up a base, and secure the area in which the Irish battalion will operate. This battalion of more than 400 soldiers is due to take up duty there by mid-December.
