24hr delay on troops' departure to Liberia

The departure of the first group of Irish soldiers for Liberia has been put back by 24 hours.

A flight bringing military equipment to the west African country has also been postponed.

The delays have been caused by heavy snow at Moscow airport which prevented the Russian carrier which was to have taken the military cargo from taking off.

Both troops and cargo are now expected to leave for Liberia early on Thursday morning.

430 Irish soldiers are expected to be in place by the middle of December.

The mission has been described as the most dangerous overseas task ever undertaken by Irish troops.

This evening, the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lt Gen Colm Mangan, said that while the job of the troops would be difficult and challenging, they would be well able for it.

General Mangan said that the troops would be operating with a more robust mandate than some previous peacekeeping missions.
