There are indications that house prices may be levelling off, particularly in the Dublin area.
The latest edition of the Permanent TSB House Price Index, which is compiled in association with the Economic and Social Research Institute, reveals that house prices nationally rose by just 0.5% during the month of September.
It continues a trend whereby the rate of increase has been moderating in recent months. In September last year, the monthly growth rate was 1.5%. Measured over the year-to-date, house prices have risen by 9.4% so far this year.
A spokesman for Permanent TSB said the statistics support the view that the very strong rate of increase in prices seen in the first half of the year is not continuing into the second half.
