UNSC votes in favour of Iraq resolution

The US has been given unanimous support in favour of its resolution on Iraq's future. The UN Security Council voted 15-0 in favour of the resolution.

The resolution encourages nations to support the US-led occupation with troops and funding.

It also asks Iraqi leaders to draw up a plan for a new constitution and elections by mid December.

Earlier, Russia, Germany and France announced that while they would support the resolution, they would not commit financial or military aid.

After the UN vote, US Secretary of State Colin Powell was cautious about saying how many extra troops from other countries would be sent to Iraq

The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said the Security Council's common objective was to restore soverignty to Iraq as quickly as possible.

Syria, who represents the Arab world on the council, also supported the resolution.
