Bush set to visit Ireland in 2004

US President George Bush will visit Ireland for an EU/US summit which will take place during this country's upcoming presidency of the European Union.

At a briefing today,the Minister of State for European Affairs Dick Roche, said its anticipated that the Irish presidency could achieve a lot for US/EU relations because of our 'cultural affinity' with the US.

The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will host the summit. Minister of State Roche also said today that the goverment believes there should be a reference to God in the preamble of the planned EU Constitution.

No reference to God or to Christianity is made in the existing draft preamble.
