France negative on US UNSC resolution

A revised US draft resolution on Iraq at the UN 'does not address our wishes,' French UN ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sabliere said today.

'We do not see the proposals that we made with Germany on essential points,' the French ambassador said after the first closed-door consultations on the draft.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan was doubtful that the new draft goes far enough in changing attitudes towards foreigners in the occupied country.

'We are studying it. We will have to determine whether it is a radical change from the past, or what it is,' Mr Annan said.

'Obviously it's not going in the direction I had recommended but I will still have to study it further,' he continued.

The draft strengthens the language on Iraqi sovereignty but sets no date to end the US occupation.

It appeared to make concessions to sceptics like France, who are calling for a speedier handover of power.
