The Progressive Democrats Parliamentary Party today gave their full backing to the planned ban on smoking in the workplace.
A spokesperson said there was 100 per cent support for the plan.
Earlier, the Taoiseach has told the Dáil that the smoking ban will go ahead as planned in January of next year.
He was responding to questions from the Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, following reports that a majority of members of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party had supported a compromise on the ban last night.
Mr Ahern said that there was enormous support for Micheál Martin's proposals.
However, a majority of speakers at last night's meeting are understood to have criticised the proposal.
Tipperary TD Noel Davern claimed that the Minister's plans were opposed by a margin of three to one.
He said that those calling for a compromise deal, that might involve the phasing-in of the plans or a partial smoking ban, included several junior ministers. The Taoiseach has told the Dáil that the smoking ban will go ahead as planned in January of next year.
