Pay-by-weight bins preferred: survey

A survey has indicated that 72% of adults would prefer a pay-by-weight method of waste collection.

Nine out of ten of those surveyed said such a method would encourage them to recycle more.

The study amongst 1,200 adults was carried out by Millard Brown IMS and was commissioned by Repak for National Recycling Week.

But 27% say recycling is too inconvenient, while 28% said they never visit their local recycling centre.

The survey comes after the announcement last week by the Minister for the Environment that he intends having the pay-by-weight system in place in all Local Authority areas by 2005.
