22% increase in HIV cases in 2002

Figures published today show the number of people with HIV here increased by 22% last year compared to 2001.

The National Disease Surveillance Centre reported 364 new cases. The largest number of new cases was among heterosexuals with more women than men being diagnosed.

Of the new cases, 186 were recorded among people born in sub-Saharan Africa. There was also an increase in the numbers of intravenous drug users becoming infected.
