The Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, has said that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's remarks about the Laffoy controversy were unworthy and offhand.

Mr Ahern said today that he had no argument with Ms Justice Mary Laffoy, who resigned from her position as chairwoman of the Commission into Child Abuse last week.

But he said that he believed she understood the Government's difficulties.

Mr Kenny has said that the Taoiseach cannot just wash his hands of what he calls the Government's 'incompetence'.
