Fine Gael has called for a reduction of the speed limit on roads near schools to 20 miles per hour.
The party's transport spokesman, Denis Naughton said Ireland had the highest accident figures in Europe involving children.
In the five years up to 2001, 55 children were killed and more than 1,400 injured.
Deputy Naughton said the introduction of a 20mph speed limit in Scotland had reduced the number of accidents involving children by two thirds.
