Stardust probe not to be reopened

The Department of Justice says there is no new evidence to re-open an inquiry into the Stardust disaster.

Relatives of some of the 48 people who died in the Valentine's eve fire at the Stardust disco in Artane, Dublin, in 1981 claimed they had evidence to show that an electrical fault was the cause of the blaze.

They produced a letter showing that 10 gallons of floor wax and polish was stored upstairs beside a room containing electrical equipment on the night of the fire.

But it has emerged that the Tribunal of Inquiry headed by Judge Ronan Keane, which reported the following year, did examine this information before deciding that the fire started downstairs probably from someone setting fire to a seat.
