Govt policies slammed at SIPTU conference

The leader of the country's largest union has said the flow of jobs from Ireland to low cost economies is now a matter of 'serious concern'.

Des Geraghty, General President of SIPTU, told the union's national conference in Galway that the Government should rethink aspects of its existing industrial strategy and taxation policy.

Earlier, Mr Geraghty has described the affordability of homes for new housebuyers as a scandal.

And on RTÉ radio today, he called for monies invested in SSIAs to be directed into personal pensions at the end of the five-year investment period.

At the conference, the union is also expected to attack the Government's policy on health care and the planned privatisation of transport services.

It is believed the 500 delegates will oppose the re-introduction of college fees and support the proposed ban on smoking in pubs.
