US troops capture key Baathist general

US troops in Baghdad say they have captured one of Saddam Hussein's former generals, suspected of helping Baathists carry out attacks on coalition forces.

The development came as the US-appointed administrator, Paul Bremer warned of what he called the emerging difficulty of foriegn terrorists in the country.

Earlier three Iraqi security guards were killed in a bomb explosion at the office of a senior Shia cleric in Najaf in central Iraq, in an apparent assassination attempt.

Elements of the former regime were suspected of being behind the attack.

Three people have been killed and nine injured after an assassination attempt on a leading Shia cleric in the Iraqi city of Najaf.

The primary suspects are former members of the Baath regime and supporters of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
