Liberian President Charles Taylor confirmed today that he will step down on 11 August, a week after west African peacekeepers arrive in the country.
The United Nations Security Council last night voted to send a multi-national force to Liberia to help implement a ceasefire between the government and rebel groups.
France, Germany and Mexico abstained in the vote because they objected to a clause which exempts participating US troops from scrutiny by the International Criminal Court.
The UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, said he agreed with the sentiments expressed by the abstaining countries.
