Gardaí have reminded motorists that a Bank holiday enforcement campaign is in operation on the roads and will remain on stream over the weekend.
Checkpoints as well as mobile patrols will be visible on roads across the country, after nine people were killed and more than 140 injured over the August weekend last year.
A Garda statement said there would be a particular emphasis on checking for speeding, drink driving and the non-wearing of seatbelts.
Waterford festival warning
Motorists are being warned of traffic delays in and around Waterford city today as tens of thousands of extra people make their way to the city for the annual Spraoi festival.
The festival, which involves dozens of street theatre and musical performances, runs until Monday.
The highlight of the weekend takes place on Sunday evening with the Spraoi parade.
