The Irish Water Safety Association has warned that an average of three people die every August Bank Holiday Weekend from drowning.

They have warned that people who take to the water infrequently should be particularly careful. From an analysis of statistics they have found that alcohol was involved in 37% of drownings last year.

The Association says the person most at risk this weekend is the one who transforms from being an infrequent water enthusiast to becoming a Bank Holiday water devotee.

The organisation says that it is necessary to be blunt to bring the message home to people - the water can be fun and enjoyable, but take care.
