The industrial development agency, Forfás, has said employment in companies supported by State agencies fell by 9,500 last year to 304,000.
This is the second consecutive year to see a fall.
In its annual report published today, Forfás said most of the reduction was in the electrical and international services sectors.
The report shows that companies supported by State agencies contributed €34bn to the economy last year, a rise of 10%.
