Brennan to meet Aer Rianta board members

The Minister for Transport, Seamus Brennan, has said he would expect directors of Aer Rianta to fully support the Government's policy to break up the company.

Aer Rianta chairman, Noel Hanlon, and two other directors, Freda Hayes and Liam Meade, who previously opposed the break-up are refusing to stand down from the board.

Mr Brennan will have to decide whether to sack or retain them when he meets all three this week.

Taoiseach against privatisation

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has said that he does not support privatisation of state companies.

Speaking at the Labour Relations Commission, Mr Ahern said that he was a big supporter of the idea that state companies would have to change, but not of privatisation.

He said he was becoming increasingly opposed to privatisation even if that was not the view of some of his colleagues.

Mr Ahern said he valued the semi-state sector and would not go down the road of creating private monopolies.
