Downing St: Iraq's WMD programme will be found

Amid growing controversy in Britain over the stated reason for the US-led invasion of Iraq, Downing Street has insisted that evidence of Saddam Hussein's programme to create weapons of mass destruction will be found.

The statement came after senior official sources told the BBC that the government no longer believed that actual weapons themselves would be discovered in Iraq.

Some commentators have suggested that Prime Minister Tony Blair is trying to lower expectations about what may be found.

The American Secretary of State, Colin Powell, who is travelling with President Bush in Africa, insisted that the Saddam Hussein government was a danger to world peace and stability.
