Calls for curb in rising retail margins

Fine Gael called on the Government to curb rising retail margins.

According to figures from the Central Statistics Office, mark-ups in the pub sector rose by a fifth in four years, to stand at 95%.

The CSO analysis shows that in 1997, goods and services in Ireland were 3% cheaper than the rest of the Eurozone. But four years later, prices were 15% dearer than in other parts of Europe.

Fine Gael's finance spokesperson, Richard Bruton, said there should now be an independent inquiry into the causes of increasing mark-ups.
