Campbell cleared of influence in dossier

A committee of MPs at Westminster has cleared Tony Blair's press secretary of exerting improper influence in the compilation of an intelligence dossier on Iraq.

In a report, the Commons' Foreign Affairs select committee says Alastair Campbell played no role in the inclusion of a controversial section which claimed that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction which were deployable within 45 minutes.

The British government has called on the BBC - which made the allegation - to apologise.

However, the MPs cleared Mr Campbell of the charge only on the casting vote of the committee's chairman.

They also strongly criticised the dossier, which was published in February, saying Mr Blair had misrepresented its status during a speech in the Commons.

The BBC's governors have defended the journalist whose report is at the centre of the row.
