Pedestrian killed in Westmeath

A pedestrian has been killed in a road accident in Kilbeggan in Co Westmeath.

She was 70-year-old Theresa Moran of Main St, Kilbeggan.

The accident happened just before 4.30 this afternoon on the town's main street.

Ms Moran was the 13th person to be killed on the country's roads since Saturday afternoon.

Earlier today, the Minister for Transport, Seamus Brennan, strongly defended the penalty points system after claims by the insurance industry that it is failing to save lives.

Mr Brennan said it would be catastrophic if people gave up on the penalty points system now.

Latest figures show road deaths for May and June are higher than last year - before the penalty points system was introduced.
