US and EU issue joint nuclear statement

US President George W Bush and European Union leaders have issued a joint statement calling on Iran and North Korea to give up any ambitions of possessing nuclear weapons.

Mr Bush said Tehran must comply or face the consequences and warned Pyongyang that it too must dismantle its alleged nuclear weapons programme.

The US President also urged EU countries to follow Washington's lead by outlawing the Palestinian group Hamas and other military organisations.

The EU, for its part, insisted that Hamas has political functions as well as a militant wing.
