A meeting between the Minister for Health and hospital consultants on the issue of insurance cover has ended.
Further talks are to take place on Friday.
It is understood that plans by the Government to introduce a new state insurance cover system from next Tuesday have been postponed.
At present, consultants doing public and private work are reimbursed for around 90% of their malpractice insurance by the State - but they choose their own insurance firm.
