Sinnott given go-ahead to challenge Cork result

The disability rights campaigner Kathy Sinnott has been given permission in the High Court to challenge the result of last year's general election in Cork South Central. Ms Sinnott was narrowly defeated in the election.

She claims that three Fianna Fáil candidates in the constituency did not include their full election expenses in their returns to the Standards in Public Office Commission.

Cork South Central turned into an election cliffhanger in May of last year, as disability rights campaigner Kathy Sinnott, and Fianna Fáil's John Dennehy, battled it out for the final seat.

A lengthy count over several days sent the result first one way and then the other, before Deputy Dennehy finally retained his seat, by a margin of just six votes.

It was the closest result of the election, and now it appears it will be fought out all over again, this time in the Four Courts.

At the centre of Kathy Sinnott's legal challenge are the figures showing substantial overspending by many candidates in the general election.
