Six die in Colombian clashes

Four civilians and two police officers have died after rebels attempted to take a town in southern Colombia.

Officials say rebels of the National Liberation Army, known by their Spanish initials ELN, attacked a police patrol in San Pablo, 900km south of Bogota. The wounded, including a child, were taken to the provincial capital Pasto for treatment of injuries which were not serious.

Police officials say the information they have is that the guerrillas wanted to take the town of San Pablo but were stopped by the authorities.

It is believed the rebels have now fled the area.
