New bridge opens on river Liffey

A new bridge across the River Liffey has been officially opened.

The James Joyce bridge links Ellis Quay on the north of the river to Ushers Island, the setting for the family home in the short story 'The Dead' in the Joyce collection 'Dubliners'.

Costing just under €9 million, the bridge was designed by Dr Santiago Calatrava Vallas and the steelwork was manufactured by Harland and Wolff in Belfast.

The opening of the bridge coincides with Bloomsday.
