Polish voters say 'Yes' to EU entry

Poles have voted themselves into the European Union, as 81.9% of those who cast their ballots said Yes to membership.

According to a first exit poll by the PBS institute, only 18.1% said no.

The poll said turnout at the referendum was 56.2%, surpassing the 50 per cent needed under Polish law for the vote to be valid.

PBS based its assessment on 1,200 selected polling stations chosen out of a total 25,165 voting stations, selected for being representative of the country's make-up.

Minister for European Affairs Dick Roche has welcomed the news fromWarsaw.

This is 'a hugely significant step in healing the wounds of the past,' he said.

Poland is the sixth accession country to vote in favour of joining the EU.

Referenda are to be held in the Czech Republic later this month, and in Estonia and Latvia in September.
