Martin won't change Hep C Tribunal rules

The Minister for Health, Micheál Martin, has refused to change the rules governing the Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal.

His decision comes despite claims by the Irish Haemophaelia Society that the Tribunal left its members in an 'unjust and unfair' position.

Mr Martin contends that all medical costs will be met by the State. However, the Haemophaelia Society argues some of its members are in danger of not being able to provide for their families.

The Minister met with representatives from the Society earlier today.

The Society had wanted the Minister to introduce new legislation to give them the right to appeal to the High Court.

More than 260 Irish haemophiliacs were infected with Hepatitis C and 105 with HIV. Eighty-one have died to date.
