Zimbabwe police have quashed opposition protests, arresting party leaders and firing tear gas to stop demonstrations aimed at driving President Robert Mugabe from power.
The crackdown came after the opposition Movement for Democratic Change called for five days of mass action.
The leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai, has been released by police after being charged with contempt of court after being arrested at his home in Harare.
The authorities have pledged to stop what they call an illegal attempt to encourage a coup d'état.
