Singapore has been declared free of SARS

Singapore has been officially declared free of SARS by the World Health Organisation, and has been removed from its list of areas affected by the disease.

The news comes after Singapore went 20 days without a new case of the illness.

The country was one of five whose athletes had been asked by the Government here not to travel to Ireland for next month's Special Olympics.

The Philippines was declared SARS free over a week ago, but China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are still being asked not to take part in the Games.

China has reported one new SARS case and four more deaths, all in the capital. It is the lowest figure for more than a month.
