Cullen: non-payment of waste charges unacceptable

The Minister for the Environment, Martin Cullen, has reiterated his support for waste charges.

Mr Cullen said: 'It is simply not acceptable that people who refuse to pay should have the luxury of having their waste collected'.

He accused opposition parties of not being prepared to 'provide any leadership, any solutions or anything meaningful on waste management'.

Mr Cullen was speaking after bringing amendments to the Environment Bill which will see recycling facilities in all new housing and commercial developments.

The Minister said it would become mandatory to take account of the need for appropriate facilities for the handling of waste and recyclables in future.
