Israeli Cabinet accepts 'road map'

The Israeli cabinet has accepted the United States backed peace plan for the Middle East.

Washington has welcomed the Israeli cabinet's adoption of the 'road map' proposal that formally committed Israel for the first time to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The Palestinian prime minister, Mahmud Abbas, is expected to meet the Israeli prime mininister Ariel Sharon tomorrow to discuss the implementation of the peace plan.

Under the plan, a Palestinian state will be set up by 2005.

Israel still has reservations about the plan, which the United States has said would be addressed as it was being implemented.
