Two Irish climbers have scaled Everest

Two climbers from Pat Falvey's Irish team reached the summit of Everest early today.

Mick Murphy and Gerard McDonnell are the first Irish climbers to scale the peak in the anniversary, 50 years since the first climb by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

Irish expedition leader and Everest veteran Pat Falvey turned around and failed to complete the climb, as did Hannah Shields.

The two Irish groups are reported to be highly regarded by the dozens of other climbers at Everest Base Camp.

Pat Falvey has earlier summited Everest from the North side. The team now has the first Irish ascent from Nepal.

Earlier, Japan's Yuichiro Miura, 70, became the oldest person so far to conquer Everest, reaching the summit with his son and a team of other climbers.
