Live TV from Mount Everest summit

A joint Chinese-South Korean team has broadcast television pictures from the top of Mount Everest.

Tibetan sherpas Awang Luobo and Zhaxi Ciren reached the summit of the world's tallest mountain first, at 0610 GMT, and were followed by the other climbers on the six-member team.

The broadcast of the climbers waving Chinese and team flags was the first live transmission by network television of a complete ascent of Everest to the summit on the North Ridge, according to China Daily.

Yesterday, a Japanese expedition became the first team to summit Mount Everest, known as Mount Qomolangma in Tibet, from the northern side this year.

Over 60 teams are attempting to conquer the 8,848 metre peak as part of the 50th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa's first successful climb of Everest on 29 May, 1953.

Weather forces delay

Severe weather conditions on the south side of the mountain have delayed the final bid to the summit by an Irish mountaineering team.

The group is led by the adventurer, Pat Falvey.

The four climbers, including Derry woman Hannah Shields, were forced to retreat to safety at 26,000 feet.
